3 Common Errors Businesses Make This Tax Time

By Pam Badke, Director of Moore Lewis & Partners

As tax season comes and goes around each year, I want to take a moment to highlight some common mistakes we’ve been seeing among businesses. With the ever-evolving tax regulations and the complexities of business finances, it’s easy to overlook key details. Here are three frequent errors that could impact your bottom line and how to avoid them.

1. Leaving Out Income

One of the most common oversights we encounter is the omission of income earned outside of your primary business. Many entrepreneurs juggle multiple income streams, such as part-time jobs or freelance side hustles. When filing taxes, it’s crucial to report all sources of income, not just what you earn through your business.

Why This Matters: Failing to include income can lead to penalties or audits from the ATO. Plus, your total income may affect your eligibility for certain deductions or credits.

Tip: Keep meticulous records of all your income. Consider using accounting software such as Xero to track all earnings in one place, making it easier to report everything accurately.

2. Incorrectly Claiming Expenses

Another common pitfall is incorrectly claiming business expenses, particularly when personal use is involved. For instance, if you use a laptop for both business and personal purposes, you can only deduct the portion related to your business use.

Why This Matters: Misclassifying expenses can raise red flags during the tax filing process, so it’s essential to differentiate between personal and business expenses to maintain compliance and maximise legitimate deductions.

Tip: Keep a detailed log of how you use your assets, like your laptop. Consider using apps that track time or usage for accurate record-keeping, ensuring you only claim what’s necessary.

3. Overstating Business Expenses

Lastly, we see many businesses overstating their expenses or the cost of goods sold (COGS). Whether it’s due to misunderstanding allowable deductions or simply misreporting, this can lead to inflated expenses on your tax return.

Why This Matters: Overstating expenses can misrepresent your business’s financial health and may result in tax liabilities that are more complicated than necessary.

Tip: Work closely with your accountant to categorise expenses accurately. Regular financial reviews can help identify and correct discrepancies before filing.

By avoiding these common errors, you can save time, money, and potential headaches down the road. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at Moore Lewis & Partners if you need guidance or support. We’re here to help you navigate the complexities of tax season and ensure your business thrives.
